Eid al-Adha is more than joyous celebrations and family gatherings. It is a time for profound reflection, marked by the sacred tradition of Qurbani. This act of worship embodies the core Islamic values of compassion, sharing, and uplifting those facing hardship.
As we share the blessings of Qurbani, the impact extends far beyond the immediate distribution of meat. When performed with sincerity, guided by the teachings of the Qur’an and Sunnah, it can be a catalyst for change.
The Prophet Muhammadﷺ said
“Verily, Allah has ordained for you the sacrifice (Qurbani), so slaughter (the animal) and satisfy the needy.”
Bukhari
The most immediate impact of Qurbani is alleviating hunger. For those who don’t have enough food, Qurbani provides life-saving nourishment that they would otherwise be without. This gift of nutritious meat restores their bodies with essential nutrients. Such sustenance leads to increased energy, enhanced cognitive abilities, and a stronger immune system – all of which are the most important first steps in overcoming the challenges of poverty and food insecurity.
Allahﷻ has instructed us to care for those in need, as the Qur’an says: “And they give food, despite their love for it, to the poor, the orphan and the captive.” –[76:8]. By giving Qurbani, we obey Allah’sﷻ command and help those struggling to escape poverty. In this act of compassion lies great reward and pleasure in the eyes of Allahﷻ.
Beyond the physical benefits, the fear and anxiety of not knowing where the next meal will come from is a significant mental and emotional burden. They don’t have the energy or sustenance to break the cycle of poverty and build a better life. Qurbani lifts that tremendous burden from their shoulders.
The provision of Qurbani gives them one less thing to consider, allowing families to direct their resources towards other crucial needs. These families can prioritise crucial aspects like healthcare and education, paving the way for a hopeful future, not just for themselves but their children too.
The Prophet Muhammadﷺ emphasised the importance of helping others:
Whoever removes a worldly grief from a believer, Allah will remove from him a grief of the Day of Judgement.”
Muslim
Qurbani becomes a symbol of gratitude for the blessings bestowed upon them. As families enjoy this sacred meal, they are reminded of the importance of each other’s support. This nurturing experience strengthens family bonds and creates an environment where children are raised firmly grounded in Islamic values and principles.
Wealthier individuals demonstrate their commitment to Islamic social responsibility through this noble act of charity. Simultaneously, underprivileged families are embraced by the support and solidarity of their brothers and sisters. This strengthens the social fabric of the Ummah, curating an environment of equity, and justice, uniting all believers.
The most important benefit is drawing closer to Allahﷻ. Qurbani is a deeply personal act of devotion that reaffirms our commitment and submission to the Almighty’s will. Through Qurbani, we forge a powerful connection to the inspiring story of Prophet Ibrahim (AS). We echo his great act of faith, reminding ourselves of our commitments to Allahﷻ.
By following the guidance of the Qur’an and the Prophet’sﷺ teachings, we can elevate the Ummah, one blessed step at a time. We can be a beacon of hope, empowering families to sustain themselves and build a brighter future. Qurbani doesn’t just feed those in need, it fuels them to continue to fight to survive another day. This Eid, your Qurbani could be the difference.
